Who could have guessed that a chance encounter between two boys in 1962 would lead to the longest lasting rock band in history and some would say, the greatest. Indeed, their resume speaks for itself: Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Start Me Up, Lady Jane, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and countless others. The 65-year saga of the Rolling Stones has many twists and turns, and more than a few dark corners. They were the first band to cultivate a negative image, and were the personification of rock’s most rebellious, antisocial, and hedonistic side, initiating a path that would directly lead to punk in the 70s, heavy metal in the 80s, and even gangsta’ rap in the 90s. The question on everyone’s lips in the 1960s was “are you a Beatle or a Stone?” Fortunately, today we can be both!

Robert Hartwell holds a doctorate in music education from Columbia University. As professor of music at Foothill College, he specializes in welcoming the uninitiated into the world of classical music. He co-authored a three-volume series on the history of Western music, and contributed to the New Pedagogies in Higher Education series. He has served as a pre-performance lecturer for the San Francisco Opera.
