Venice is one of Italy’s most visited destinations, a captivating city crisscrossed by ancient waterways. It is built on a group of 126 islands in the Venetian Lagoon; the islands are separated by expanses of open water and canals, and the parts of the city are linked by 472 bridges. Old buildings and grand palaces rise from the water, adding to the timeless feel of the place. Venice has been ranked many times as the most beautiful city in the world. Blending history, art and culture with a good dose of delectable food and drink, it is a place that everyone should see at least once in their life and so this summer we will take you there. William H. Fredlund, the Director of the Institute, obtained his B.A. and M.A. from UCLA, where he specialized in European history and art history. He studied in Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship and completed a double Ph.D. in history and humanities at Stanford, specializing in Renaissance Italy. Dr. Fredlund has taught for UCLA, the University of Florence, Stanford, and UCSC Extension.
