The prestige of the string quartet genre had been firmly established by the great Viennese masters of the Classical period, and those earlier achievements, particularly the work of Beethoven, now represented a challenge that most subsequent composers felt they had to deal with in one way or another. Last quarter, Maestro Shoebotham presented four amazing lecture/performances that traced the history of the string quarter from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Schubert. This fifth lectures will further explore the string quartet, examining works from the Romantic period, and the presentation will again be a combination of lecture and live musical performance as we enjoy some of the greatest quartets from the middle and late 19th century.
