Human beings have never lived without art. We can look back at the caves of Altamira and see the works of artists who lived 25,000 years ago. Why do human beings make art? Why do we need art? Is it beauty? Emotion? Mystery? Magic? Probably all of these things, but there is more. Come join us for a nine-week journey into one of the most important questions at the center of our lives: “Why do we love art?”

William H. Fredlund, the Director of the Institute, obtained his B.A. and M.A. from UCLA, where he specialized in European history and art history. He studied in Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship and completed a double Ph.D. in history and humanities at Stanford, specializing in Renaissance Italy. Dr. Fredlund has taught for UCLA, the University of Florence, Stanford, and UCSC Extension.
