More Info

Leonard Bernstein was the most photographed, televised, documented, scrutinized, analyzed, criticized, and finally lionized and celebrated artist of the 2nd half of the 20th century, and no wonder.  In addition to being a conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, television personality, author, and humanitarian, he was also Harvard educated, movie star handsome, and madly charismatic.  The tragedy of his life—if that is the right word—is that one lifetime was simply not enough to explore his many gifts.

Robert Hartwell holds a doctorate in music education from Columbia University. As professor of music at Foothill College, he specializes in welcoming the uninitiated into the world of classical music. He co-authored a three-volume series on the history of Western music, and contributed to the New Pedagogies in Higher Education series. He has served as a pre-performance lecturer for the San Francisco Opera.
